Happy July! It was a hot start to summer but hopefully we'll get a few cooler days and more soft rains this month! The magnolias, hydrangeas and pomegranates are bursting forth into bloom! If you haven’t made it to see our gardens yet this season, we’ve got some great upcoming opportunities! You can also book a private tour with a few of your friends and fellow gardeners by contacting 252-639-3524 or reservations@tryonpalace.org.
During the mornings- check out the kitchen garden for sunflowers, leek blooms, apples and awesome heirlooms galore! In the heat of the day, cool off with a walk through the Wilderness under the gorgeous magnolias. When you’re ready for more sun, check out the awesome annuals in the Latham and Carraway Gardens- the bananas are a garden staff favorite! Don't miss the beautiful Stanly and Jones House gardens, full of a mix of beautiful shrubs and perennials!
Our July garden lecture series, Saturday, July 8th, features a showing of The Gardener, a documentary film about Frank Cabot that reflects upon the meaning of gardening and its impact on our lives. Shortly before his passing at the age of 86, influential gardener and plantsman Frank Cabot recounts his personal quest for perfection at Les Quatre Vents, his twenty-acre English style garden and summer estate that was opened to a film crew for the first time ever in 2009. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Charlevoix County in Quebec, Les Quatre Vents has become one of the world’s foremost private gardens. Created over 75 years and three generations, it is an enchanted place of beauty and surprise, a horticultural masterpiece of the 21st century. Through the words of Cabot and his family, and with the participation of gardening experts and writers, the film looks back at this remarkable man’s personal story and the artistic philosophy that gave birth to one of the greatest gardens in the world. One hour, 24 minutes; directed by Sébastien Chabot Lecture begins at 10:30 a.m. in Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina History Center with a suggested donation of $3.
If you’re interested in a long term “behind the scenes” venture, we are looking for volunteers for raking, mulching, weeding, fence and trellis repair and MORE! It’s a great way to learn some gardening tips and tricks, especially for our area! If that sounds like your cup of tea, please contact me at hadley.cheris@ncdcr.gov.
We hope to see you soon! Happy Gardening,
Hadley Cheris, Tryon Palace Gardens and Facilities
